I don't think it's anything to do with age, rather compile time options.
nvi-1.79 (which RH ship) *definitely* supports infinite undo when I've
compiled from source. I've been using versions of nvi with this feature
for *at least* 6 or 7 years. If Debian are shipping an older version
than that, then somethings wrong somewhere :-)
