I like to use kppp
There is a modem query tool in there too, which I like.

As you say, this is limited to connect to ttyS0 and ttyS1 (maybe a
couple more), plus /dev/modem

So just make the relevant link between /dev/modem and /dev/ham
and see if you get a response.
