Any IDE CD burner will work with cdrecord (you need to have SCSI emulation 
turned on). cdrecord supports overburn (it's one of the options you have to 
specify; not sure which one). I had a 2x writer, that I never had any 
problems with, and my current 6x writer doesn't give me problems either.
