Whoop,s no that was a typo, should have been eth0:0
The virtual interface was working OK until the reboot.
I set it up interactively using /sbin/ifconfig.

I haven't got access to the file at the moment but the eth0:0 section
was basically a reproduction of the eth0 section but with eth0:0 and the
new IP address.

Gateway was specified with a "gateway" line, not with a "up route add
..." line.
