The gateway just specifies the route packets take when going to the
outside world, yes?
So if I want this to be specified when the machine boots is it
sufficient just to have the "gateway" line? Or do I need to also add the
"up route add gw xx.yy.zz.tt" (can't remember the exact syntax right
now) in order to set up the gateway in the first place?

If I do "/sbin/route add default gw ..." etc from the command line does
that just set up the default gateway until the next reboot or network
restart? Or is it permanently stored in some file or internally
somewhere forever?

Paul.
