Have you tried the latest vlc client? (http://www.videolan.org).  They have
made some big improvements.

Now on version 0.92 I think it works with a lot of DVDs that previously did
not play at all.  Some I need to actually choose the chapter to play before
it finishes the DVD's into and stops ;-)
