Automatic gearing for bicycles has never caught on, because there's a
certain increase in friction; for a given speed there's more than one
gear you might want to use depending on whether you're accelerating
hard, cruising, planning to increase speed slowly, or whatever; and
gear changes cause unpredictable fluctuations in the drive power.

I believe that motor cars suffer from all these issues too, but to a
lesser degree, which is what makes automatics a feasible alternative.
