Both ESD and ARTS come complete with "wrapper" scripts that allow
programs not designed to be used with them to work (that is, they
attempt to reroute the audio device) They're called "artsdsp" and
"esddsp" (leaving as an exercise to the reader which is used with
which)

IME, they tend to work reasonably well. One particularly evil thing to
do is to run the command "artsdsp esd" (the opposite never seemed to
work for me) and then anything that needs either arts or esd works
fine :)
