I dispute this. You're suggesting that it is pleasant for humans to look
into a large light-emitting surface all day: the blinding headache I get
when forced to use dark-on-light displays of any kind (and the absence of
such on a light-on-dark display) argues against that.

We're not designed to stare into the sun, or to stare directly at the
sky for hours on end: and I can't think of much else in the natural
world that's as bright as a white monitor over long time periods
(*especially* a white monitor in a dark room!)

You'd have done better to read an article on display usability :)

I can't see how any of those are influenced by screen brightness. If the
screen is flickering it'll be annoying regardless, although probably
more noticeable (and hence more annoying) on a light-backgrounded
screen.
