One problem that can happen is with ident. Under some circumstances, if
your sendmail issues an ident request to the remote system, and the
request is silently dropped (as opposed to rejected) by a firewall at
the far end, sendmail can wait long enough that the mail connection
times out. Check the timeouts in your cf file to make sure that this
isn't the problem.
