On Fri 14 Jun, Kim Hawtin made the following spurious claims:

> when you watch it at the movies, the money goes to the advertising
> and the distributers ... when you watch it on dvd, the money goes to
> the distributors and the advertisers, and the cinema gets shafted.

The structural problem that is causing the price increases is the way
Hollywood has been making films the last few years. The movies have
big first weekends and then bomb. Think about how many people would
have gone to see yet another crappy American Pie ripoff after hearing
from their friends who've seen it.

The cut that cinemas get from ticket sales is on a sliding scale. The
first week it's 80-90/20-10 and it gets better as the movie
progresses. So that means they're getting less and less because if
they run the shitty films longer, they screen to empty cinemas. So
instead they have to raise prices to mean they get more money from the
shitty slice they get.

It's gonna grind to a halt and lots of people, mostly cinema
operators, are going to lose big time. It happened in the 50s and a
lot of the big studios went to the wall. It's going to happen again.
