Well, in a home environment security (hence root stuff) is much less of an
issue. As a relatively new Linux user (btw is there a term akin to
'treckie'?) finding my 'Linux legs' as root in X was much less daunting than
bashing the console (although I've now stripped all X related stuff off my
home server - agh, the smugness of progress). IMHO 'you don't need to use X
for that, this is how you do it on the console and it's bore secure' is much
better, more helpful, and more likely to encorage a recent convert than
'don't log in to X as root'.
That'll be £0.02, thanks.
