Not replacing or doctoring it, per se, but along the same lines...
Write small shim library that calls the real exec, and logs an
appropriate error should it return. Then insert that with LD_PRELOAD.
Of course, you'd need a basic knowledge of C to do that, but it's the
only solution that immediately springs to mind.
