I know this has been asked about on the list before so when I came across 
this I thought I'd pass it on.  It's a library you can preload to 
intercept file deletions (and, optionally, over-writes) and move the file 
to a trash directory.  Per-user configurable and by choosing carefully 
how/when you loaded it you could make it apply only to certain processes 
(e.g. a Samba server).

Haven't tested it yet but I will.
