I suggest examining using fetchmail + cyrus, and effectively ignoring
the MTA issue entirely. (I actually do use sendmail for sending the
email, but I really needn't - there's no real reason not to send it all
direct to my ISP).

That way you get to use IMAP, which is fantastic if, like me, you read
email from multiple clients on multiple machines, and SIEVE, which is a
wonderfully simple way of filtering your email nicely.

Of course, if you really don't want to use IMAP, then this isn't for
you.
