There's no problem deleting files when they're open.  The actual
deletion won't happen until they are closed, is all.  A file is deleted
when it has no hard links pointing to it (that's all a filename is, a
hard link) and no processes have it open.

DOS/Windows applications, with their FAT heritage, are still fixated on
filenames but in *nix you can delete or rename/move a file while it is
being (e.g.) downloaded or played (if a music file, say) and it doesn't
make any difference to the application that has the file open.
