I echo what Jim and chris have said about Cat5, and the shielded cables.
Note that you can see on most (?) switches that there is metal
surrounding the RJ45 entrance 'hole'.
Also, AFAIK, the metallic shield should be earthed at one end only -
probably the switch end, that being the reason for this metal plate
on the switch.

I was running a conference at an unnamed teaching hospital in London.
We were running in a temporary network setup, for teaching labs
and video conferencing.
We got hold of a box of Cat5, just like Formi.
We ran it along the corridors, then crimped RJ45 plugs on the end.
The plugs fell off.
A day later, following much hair pulling and an 8am(!) visit to RS
in the East End to buy a brand new crimp tool,
we figired out that we had got hold of a drum of solid core Cat5.
You can't attach plugs directly to this - the little 'forks'
which cut the insulation need stranded cable.
We put wall plate type sockets on the end and it worked first time.
