[Gllug] xauth locking timeout

Hi Everyone.
What does this mean when I try to log in...

/usr/X11R6/bin/xauth:  timeout in locking authority file
/home/steve/.Xauthority
[steve at server steve]$

accompanied by a reasonable time-out delay before getting the prompt.
I've had a look at permissions and so on and there seems to be no
problem??
