Probably similar, performance-wise.

The difference is how you prefer to write code and whether you want to
make use of a large, high-quality library of working code and examples
(CPAN).

I don't like the standard PHP way of code interspersed within HTML.  I
find that scales incredibly badly.  If you think Perl is hard to read,
just wait until you get your PHP file back from a designer!
