I've recently installed Mandrake 8.2 on a couple of machines,
using the version of the download edition that came with Linux
Format. No mouse problems at all (and generally very happy with
it... although KDE 2.2.2 doesn't always seem quite as snappy as
I'd like).

In the past, I've had some problems with the gpm mouse service
(which should give a mouse pointer in text based mode). Now I
always make a point of turning it off during the installation
process.

You could have a check in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d to see if the gpm
service is started when entering run level 5 (graphical mode). I
don't have it starting at any run level, although the gpm script
is still in /etc/rc.d/init.d .

Since turning gpm off has solved the problems I've had in the past
(mouse whizzing uncontrollably to the top corner of the screen)
I've not had cause to investigate further, although if you want to
compare settings between our Mandrake 8.2 installations, give me
the places to look and I'll give you the settings I'm using.
