This may be bordering on internet urban legend...

"Randy shared a trick for recovering asick drive: Put the drive into a
plastic bag and then into the freezer for a few hours. That makes all the
metal parts shrink and may give you an opportunity to extract the critical
data off it."

I've had to resort to this before.  Maybe it was a coincidnece, but the
drive did initialise, and I did get my data off the drive.  I also now own
a tape drive. :)

Just don't expect your drive to *ever* work again after attempting this...
