[Gllug] Can't connect to the Internet.

Anybody know if there's a way to find out if I'm on the Internet without 
actually clicking on a link. I often have to pick up the phone to listen to 
see if I can hear a screeching modem :)
Would be real sweet to have a little flashing icon of some sort.
Anthing like that around for wvdial?
