I haven't been successful getting X auto configured on Debian, even with a standard config. It's not that bad changing the XF86Config-4 if you read the man page and the docs on http://www.xfree86.org, I've had to do it a few times now to get two matrox cards working then dualhead with a G450. Make sure to save a copy of your working one somewhere safe in case you need to re-install or have problems changing things later.
