[Gllug] VIM and key map for ispell?

I'm having problems getting the following to work in .exrc for VIM so I can use ispell.
map ^w ^[:w^M:!ispell %^M:e! %^M^M

after restarting VIM and trying to list mapped keys by ":map" this one isn't listed.  I also tried mapping it to ",s" and deleted another mapping that was using ",s", but the original mapping still appears rather than the new one.  Any have any ideas where I should be checking.

Also what is the difference between .exrc and .vimrc?
