Not on any Debian boxes I use.  If I use a wide terminal, I get wide
output.

You may be encoutering a problem with the standard xterm, which often
doesn't detect resize events well nor does it always detect a
non-standard terminal size on start-up.  In which case a quick

	resize

fixes it.
