remember to remove the line from /etc/gshadow as well (most distros ship
with shadow passwords turned on)

If there is any chance that someone else might edit the file or change a
password at the same time as you, you probably ought to use
  vigr
followd by
  vigr -s 
instead - these utilities lock the files (apparently).
