<personal bugbear>
"split infinitive" is a grammarian's attempt to apply Latin grammar to
English. It is nonsense. The 'to' is no more part of the verb than
'the' or 'a' is part of a noun.
they are becoming accepted in normal written English, in schools and
elsewhere.
