Whether the simple email->mobile option is available will depend upon your 
network although I think all offer it - T-Mobile certainly do.

It works just like any other email transmission method. You send a message 
to a given email address (your number at mobileoperator.net) and the message 
is forwarded to your phone in the same manner as SMS.

Obviously you want to restrict the size of messages but it's ideal for 
alerts.

Alternatively you can use SMS.

The advantage (or disadvantage at times) with email is that the charge is 
receiver borne so I don't need a commercial SMS agreement to get messages 
through.
