COFF is the executable format used by SVR3 and earlier, which was
superseded by ELF in SVR4. COFF still persists in some places, though,
for example on Tru64 UNIX. The COFF format has also been extended in
various ways, for example, XCOFF which can be found on PPC machines,
or ECOFF which is common on MIPS. But unless you have good reason to
do otherwise, stick with ELF...
