[Gllug] HTTP CONNECT

I am seeing a couple of these cropping up in my apache logs:

a.b.c.d - - [10/Oct/2002:15:08:47 +0100] "CONNECT mail.somedomain.net:25 
HTTP/1.0" 200 5417 "-" "-"

Can anyone tell me what they are?  I tried running the command myself after 
telnetting to port 80:

CONNECT mail.somedomain.net:25 HTTP/1.0

but I just got my normal homepage.
