Only IDE CDRWs; SCSI CDRWs (sadly rare and expensive these days, but I
think the OP has one) don't require it. ATAPI is essentially SCSI's
command set over IDE, which is why scsi emulation is needed, since the
easiest way to use such devices is to make it look as if they are SCSI
ones.
