I was on a course many years ago about (then new) digital techniques, and
was told that BT (it was the Post Office then) sent two separate data
streams through their network, one was purely control data, and the other
was the digitally encoded audio.
I did not work for BT, but was often required to set up and test
connections through temporary circuits which had to work at the appointed
time. There were some very obscure faults, and the local engineers were
often less used to dealing with them than we were, so we were given some
additional information. They may well have changed their system, or be using
different systems in different parts of the country.
