I use freeparking.co.uk to purchase domains and run the DNS.  You can
add/alter CNAME A and MX records.  I've not tried to move a record
away from them so I can't comment on that.  I've also found the
technical people patient and competent (I completely messed up my DNS
records years ago).  Don't know how cheap they are compared to others
but it all hangs together well.
