I can't speak for others, but when I'm recruiting, I tend to ignore
certifications like this. Real world experience counts for 10 times
as much as a piece of paper that says you know the theory. Given the
amount of money that professional certifications cost, I can't see
it's worth taking them.

Again, from personal experience, one of the main things I look for is
breadth of experience (perhaps more so than depth). Learn about as many
different things as you can. Pick up an old Unix workstation on Ebay
(sun4c machines are going for less than a tenner, for example) and
learn about Solaris, HP/UX, DG/UX, OSF/1 etc. Set up a home network
with DNS, NFS, Samba, NIS, LDAP, NTP, syslog, etc. Build yourself
a firewall, and learn about NAT and port forwarding. Just acquire
knowledge of as many related topics as you can.
