I don't know if I'd call Debian alternative.  It's the most popular distro
in a number of countries, and very popular here too. :-)

Anyway, if you follow the instructions at:

http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/install

you shouldn't go wrong.  They're quite comprehensive.
