Your best all-round solution is to make it boot from cd :)

Some laptops need some funny things to make them boot from CD, on top of
the normal BIOS settings and so forth.  I'd recommend a good google to
see if (like on the old Toshiba Porteges) you need to hold a special key
while powering up to boot from cd.  Or something like that.
