Thanks for the various responses

Regret I copied the new binary over the top of the old, so stracing them
to compare is not possible.  If you are interested I can send you an strace of
the new version  (pls reply off-list if so !)

Yup, my guess too was that re-compilation with the new kernel sources in place
somehow changed the programs behaviour subtley, although I was under the
impression that installing a new kernel did not change any of the libraries
that the source includes.
