Dear GLLUGers,
Some of you asked me about my experiences with this, so
here's the story so far.
I ordered my ADSL line the week before last. PlusNet took
the connection charge before BT activated the line (a bit
cheeky in my view). The line was activated last week
(PlusNet took their first month's rental immediately :-) and
I ordered a D-Link DSL-604+ modem from ebuyer. This arrived
yesterday. Turned on the DSL-604+ and connected my laptop
(RH 8.0) to one of the Ethernet ports.
The DSL-604+ came up as 192.168.0.1 and its DHCP allocated
192.168.0.2 to my laptop. The web-based configuration tool
worked fine and I allocated my static IP address to the ADSL
link. The only problem was that the configuration tool
thought that the period character (.) was a tab, so I
couldn't type in my username!
However, I overcome that using the mouse cut and paste
feature (really useful) and the connection came up. I'm
getting 470-500 kbps according to the broadband speed tester
on the www.plus.net web site. No outages so far. Rebooting
the laptop was no problem.
Next stage is to turn off DHCP and use static IP addresses
on my local network. Then I'll check the wireless
connection and see if I really can use my laptop in the
garden!
Regards,
Mick /"\
