much later - but I found some time to mess with this again...

it seems to go to F8 - but I just get another black screen (with a
blinking underscore character top left)

now alt-ctrl-F[1-6] takes me to the riht virtual console
alt-ctrl-F[7-8] takes me to a black screen

alt-ctrl-F[9-12] have no effect

I have discovered why tty2-6 were missing (now fixed)
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1
2:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty2
3:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty3
4:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty4
5:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty5
6:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty6

and I'm in runlevel 5 (doh!)

I can open X apps as root if I do

cp /home/seanb/.Xauthority /root/

and I have discoverd that if I run kcontrol as root - I am then able to
log out of kde and get back to the kdelogin panel

(normally logging out of kde takes me to a black screen)
