[Gllug] programming(rs232)

Dear sir,
        This is concerning the serial port (programming).
Iam a student of Th University Of The South Pacific and i was was 
wondering if you could 
email some useful information on how to program a serial port (rs232)
This will be really helpful on the completion of a current research 
project.
To be more precise, i need to know how to program a serial port to a 
control device(sending outputs and reading inputs)and how hardware 
devices can be interfaced to the rs232 serial port.
