[Gllug] Installing Debian with 3ware Hardware RAID 1 Controller

Hello

I am running RedHat on a dev server (AMD Athlon + 760MPX chipset) which has
a 3ware Escalade 7000-2 RAID controller. I have RAID 1 controlling two IDE
hard disks.

I would like to install Debian, and re-partition my disk at the same time,
but I am worried about whether or not Debian will recognise the 3ware
controller.

3ware's site is not very helpful - the only comment I could find (dated
August 2003) was that '3ware does not officially support Debian Linux'
though they mention that if Debian is compiled with the relevant drivers it
should work.

Can I avoid re-compiling Debian? And if it is possible, is there anything to
be mindful of?

I'm still near the bottom of the Linux learning curve, so by all means be
frank with your opinions as to whether or not I should attempt this!

I suppose I could just try to install Debian, and if I fail go back to
re-installing RH... I'm not likely to break anything, am I?

Many thanks, and kind regards

Harry Mantheakis
