Update - HP to the rescue...

Took my HP ProCurve 2524 to the site.

Unplugged their netgear 16 port and put in the ProCurve.

Rebooted all the PCs

The errors stopped and the linux box was fine.

Logged into the procurve, it instantly showed CRC errors on port 
13(unlucky!)

Replaced the NIC in the (old) PC on port 13 - no more errors :-)))))

Showed MD.

Was about to swap back to NetGear Hub when MD insisted on buying the 
Procurve (easiest sale for a long time ;-)

What more can I say - thank you HP.
