Hi there,

I have switched over a desktop which had previously been running
2.6.0-test11 and am initially reasonably impressed.

However the series of problems with 2.4 leads me to caution using this
kernel in production environments on critical systems - you never know
when someone will decide to fix the memory "limitations" in 2.6 by
rewriting the entire vm system between stable kernel releases...

I remember the problems we had with an SMP box running the 2.4 test
series (the document you reference which has been around for a while and
seems a good read is right about how it does seem only yesterday we got
our first 2.4 systems) and would not want that again :-).

I have noticed less circulation of the UTLK second edition (my copy now
has stains and pen marks and paper foldings of various meanings) in
bookshops over the last few months (yes I am sad enough to have looked
for that general trend) so wonder if a new edition is due soon.

Professionally I work on PowerPC embedded Linux systems and there are a
growing number of Linux source trees (in fact actually three) for stable
PowerPC development depending upon what you are doing. It will be a
considerable time before most non-Intel people fully switch.

I still believe Linux is often read as x86-Linux by most.

Jon.
