----QUOTE----
Hi All,
I'm having problems with Win98 hosts using a RH8 Samba box. Sometimes
its OK then it will seem to freeze and not work. All seems well on the
box but /sbin/ifconfig gives:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:40:95:31:05:AD
inet addr:192.168.151.64 Bcast:192.168.151.255
Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:544324 errors:1692 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:682763 errors:16905 dropped:0 overruns:2 carrier:33810
collisions:96742
RX bytes:99197511 (94.6 Mb) TX bytes:621743151 (592.9 Mb)
and that seems like a lot of errors?
(My other linux boxes at different sites have zero)
Any pointers as to what to try first?
Simon

That also seems like a high number of Ethernet collisions. These are most
common when using Ethernet hubs.
How many machines on this network, and how many hubs/switches?
Also the number of CRC errors is high. You should only get one error per
hundred thousand frames or so (if I can remember from the book). In a
network I saw once they had run Cat 5 through the roofspace along side
strip lighting which caused a lot of network errors. Also large monitors
_could_ cause errors.
Could just be a faulty card on the server or a client.

(Apologies for my retarded quoting style)
