Making war may well be *unpleasant* for those who have to do the fighting 
but when one is on the receiving end of war the word *unpleasant* has got 
to be the understatement to beat 'em all.

Incidentally, to describe an attack by some of the strongest military 
powers in history (democracies, no less) on a devastated, impoverished 
country as a *war* would leave Orwell impressed, though hardly shocked.
I tend to do it myself all to often :)
