At the end of December I got another copy of Linux Format through the
door and noticed that one of the items on the coverdisk was a Linux
version of the EMusic.com downloader. I followed it up and have since
become a satisfied customer of Emusic - a wide (though admittedly far
from exhaustive) catalogue of music that I am free to download in MP3
format. The artist (and label) still get a cut and have agreed to the
transaction; I get more than enough music without the ecological
disaster of unnecessary packaging.

It's not open source, and there's a lot of tracks it doesn't have, but
I find a monthly investment of $9.99 a reasonable price for the service;
I've certainly added much more music to my collection in a couple of
months than I did throughout all of last year, for much less money and
all 100% above board and legal.

Worth checking out, and not just because you can get a Linux version of
the downloader software.
