A little research shows that sar, along with another old favourite, iostat,
is available in the sysstat package. debian, suse, redhat, mandrake packages
are all available.

I don't use debian so I can't recommend how or where to get it, but this
link looks promising:

There is a utility called "sar" that you can probably get hold of which
records load over  specified intervals. I used to use it on ICL DRS SVR4 and
SCO - there must be a linux version though.

Running top from cron with the -b (batch) option, and redirecting to a file
will give you an idea of what was running when the system rebooted.

This is what I use on troublesome machines anyway.

Okay, my co-lo server rebooted itself this morning.  Ruling out problems
with power from the co-lo place, how do I determine what went wrong
(there's nothing in the syslog but timestamps?)

Okay, a better question.  How should I be monitoring (logging) what's
going on the machine.  For example, if I want a record of the load on the
machine what's the best way about going about this?  I could easily write
a million and one perl scripts to do this kind of thing for me, but I'd
rather not reinvent the wheel, so I thought I'd ask for advice.

It's running debian, so stuff I can apt-get is always good...
