If you haven't got any particular investment in sendmail, you might want
to look at using different MTA software, perhaps exim, postfix or qmail.
Sendmail is particularly unintuitive to configure, in me experience.

exim is a doddle to set up, if you rtfm.  qmail is good too, but because
of it's strange licensing it is effectively unsupported now.  postfix
looks very good, but i've not tried it.
