A managed switched will typically have a pretty GUI to allow you to
administer the switch.  They also provide lots of extra functionality
such as the ability to set ports up or down, or force them to 10 or 100.

Also your average managed switched will per provide per-port information
on throughput, this can be useful for diagnosing network problems.

In short, yes, buy managed switches, it's worth it.
