This can be an /etc/hosts problem
Check /etc/hosts and make sure that it looks a bit like this...

127.0.0.1               localhost.localdomain localhost
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx            yourpcname.your.domain.name yourpcname

with, obviously, an appropriate ip address for your machine and the 
correct domain and hostnames.

If this isn't right, KDE and some other programs will take AGES to start 
as they will wait and eventually timeout waiting for a reverse DNS or 
whatever on the hostname...
